The colors of summer permeate the galleries of Sisters during this week’s Fourth Friday Artwalk, sponsored by Sisters Arts Association. Galleries are open all day, with featured artists and light refreshments taking the stage starting at 4.
GALLERIES
The Stitchin’ Post’s Fiber Art Gallery displays “Printed Then Stitched,” a digital and manual fiber art show by Sharon Carvalho, opening with a reception from 4 to 6 p.m. Sharon’s art is about variety. She created textiles from her own photographs and art using Photoshop Elements. Original patterns and designs were captured digitally, photo-edited and then printed onto linen, quilted and embellished by hand.
Wildflower Studio features current original works by Kathy Deggendorfer, created in watercolor using saturated pigments and varied lines to depict vibrant flowers, small-town landscapes, and birds. This show will include new original framed paintings, prints, and tiles. Also, look for new berry bowls, pinch pots and mugs by Hunter Teig, along with many gift items like candles, room sprays, and diffusers.
Hood Avenue Art focuses on four artists: Susan Yokoyama, Ruth Carroll, Layne Cook, and Annie Hinkes. Susan combines the rustic look of hand building with the magic of the potter’s wheel, resulting in unique items glazed to produce sparkling effects and patterns. Her special interest is Japanese tea bowls done with the raku process. Ruth paints still life and figurative works, but her favorite subjects are landscapes and seascapes, both in Oregon and California. With a background in textile printing and design, Layne Cook is fascinated by all aspects of painting including composition, the role of light and shadows, the use of color and the value of restraint in using color. Annie Hinkes is the creator of Ana Eugenia Jewelry, a small line of handmade jewelry.

Rickards Gallery is hosting painter David Mensing, and glass artist Mare Schelz. David’s paintings include landscape and floral images infused with rich color and depth of understanding that reflects his personal faith. Mare creates intricate mosaics in glass that capture both specific landscapes and abstract interpretations of nature.
Toriizaka Art’s wildlife watercolorist Don Zylius demonstrate his wet wash watercolor technique, sharing the inspiration, process and passion behind his work. Don’s signature style blends realism with a dreamlike sense of wonder. Born in 1935, Don has lived and painted in Sisters for decades, and is widely recognized for the rich detail, natural color and evocative moods of his paintings.
Sisters Gallery and Frame explores the Animal Kingdom this month. The roundup includes images by gallery artists Danae Miller, Randall Tillery, Wendy Birnbaum, Barbara Berry, J. Chester Armstrong, Kimry Jelen, Jennifer Hartwig, Michelle Deaderick, Caroline Stratton Crow, and Summer Derrickson. Jewelry maker Timber Lark will be creating his delicate pendants and earrings from local hardwoods and silver.
The Campbell Gallery has exquisite quilts by Sisters artists Helen Brisson and Judith Beaver. Their exhibit will remain on display in through the end of July. The gallery may or may not always be open, depending on the ongoing road construction on Adams Avenue.

Also, be sure to check out the work of local artists on the SAA’s Art Walls around town. Art Walls are in various non-gallery locations including The Barn, Fika, Sisters Bakery and The Hub. QuickDraw: At the close of the Artwalk, a drawing will e held for two $50 gift certificates, good at any participating gallery. Visitors may sign up once per gallery.
