This Thanksgiving Weekend, the Sisters Arts Association is thankful for all who support our local artists and galleries. As you consider gifts for your loved ones this season, think about art, about creativity, and about the wide range of locally designed and made items available in the galleries and shops of Sisters.

Opening on Fourth Friday and running through Christmas, it’s the The Stitchin’ Post Staff’s Handcrafted Gift Boutique. Items range from quilts through everyday items, as well as ornaments and holiday decorations. There will be quilts, pincushions, little wallets, gnome bottle toppers and mini stockings by Jackie, embroidered tea towels, Christmas ornaments and quilts by Annette, table runners by Diane, and block printed zipper pouches by Valori. This is the once-a-year opportunity to see and purchase fiber art created by your friends who do this for a living! And, how they love what they do!

Featured this month at The Clearwater Gallery is the stunning work of local jewelry artist, Wendy Vernon. She meticulously hand makes each piece using a variety of fine gemstones and crystals. This includes druzy agate, Labradorite and geode slices. Every creation has unique characteristics, distinctive wearable art. Visit Clearwater between 4 and 6 p.m. for wine and appetizers, and have fun trying on some of Vernon’s latest pieces.

All the way from the small town of Halfway in the northeast corner of Oregon, comes the work of Antonia Carriere, featured at Sisters Gallery and Frame Shop. Carriere’s exquisite pastels depict scenes from a part of the state where not everyone gets to visit. “Northeast Oregon holds endless inspiration for me – huge canyons, greenbelt rivers, farmland, snowy mountain peaks, dry golden hills and big, big skies,” Carriere says. Although she majored in art at Pasadena City College in the early 1960s, life took her in different directions, raising a family and becoming a garden designer. She continued to study with such fine teachers as Douglas Campbell Smith, Judy Hoiness, and Kathleen Keliher, and when she retired and moved from Central Oregon to Halfway, she created a studio and began to paint in earnest. A large selection of her newest work will be on display through the season at Sisters Gallery.

Jewelry repair and restoration may be just what you need for that special holiday gift. So visit Brian Lee Brown at his Metals Jewelry Studio in the Three Creeks Building. Brown has been repairing heirlooms and personal treasures for more than 30 years. “From a simple resizing to the most difficult repair,” Brown says, “I’ve done it.” A treasured piece can get a new life in his capable hands.

The Campbell Gallery at Sisters Art Works continues its show by High Fiber Diet, a group of fiber artists committed to advancing their art professionally. Affiliated with the Columbia Fiberarts Guild of Portland, HFD members challenge themselves to learn more about art and design principles and improve creatively on an individual basis. This is a juried show called “Can You Hear It?” that includes visual interpretations of sound. The goal is to get viewers to “hear” the work, just by looking at it. All of the works are visually tied together by incorporating a piece of fabric called “Radio Waves” by Marcia Derse. This is a juried show, and while the jurors’ choices were not always unanimous, they found common ground in pieces that have visual impact, that leave space for interpretation, and that is finely crafted. The jury cited an article from an art critic, published in The Oregonian, who wrote: “The truth is, all that matters is this: Does the work move you? Does it have integrity and power, and skill? Does it suggest things beyond itself?”

Hood Avenue Art is expanding to incorporate the space that The Collection Gallery vacated when Gary and Karen Cooley retired.  The larger area will include work by local artists: Barbara Hudler Cella will show plein air paintings; Glen Corbett has a collection of fine botanical art and printmaking; Gary Cooley will show his bronze sculptures, and Clarke Berryman will display original human portraits and oil paintings of wild animals. The Small Wonders show will continue with affordable prices ranging from $20 to $250. The gift of art can last a lifetime.  Guitarist David Skeleton will provide musical selections.

The Sisters Area Chamber of Commerce will host its 2021 Christmas Tree Lighting ceremony on Friday, starting at 5:30 p.m., with the tree lighting at 6. Before (or after), you can warm up and meet local artists and see their work at half a dozen gallery locations. In addition to sponsoring holiday events, the Chamber is the underwriter for the SAA’s monthly Quick Draw, which awards two $50 gift certificates each month, October through December. Be sure to sign up one time in each gallery that you visit.

Sisters Gallery Maps are available HERE or get them in galleries, at the Chamber of Commerce, and at many businesses in town.
